Save Those Fabric Scraps

Don't know what to do with those little scraps left over from your sewing projects? Do you usually throw them away? Recycle them! You can cut out rectangles to use as sew-on noses for your raggedies, or to make little pockets on their dresses. Better yet, cut up the leftover pieces and store them in a plastic ziploc bag. When my 6 year old granddaughter begs to help me - I let her cut up the strips any way she wants - and add them to the bag. These will be great to use for stuffing dolls instead of using polyester filling.

  • In the state of Pa. if you make your living making dolls, pillows, etc. you must make something and take it to the state for approval and they give you an I.D. # that you must attach to all stuffed items. If not, they can remove the items from your store shelves...

  • I heard that if you just go to a home improvement store, you can ask for a bag of sawdust, and they'll give it to you for free. Never tried it though!

  • Can you tell me where to purchase bags of sawdust?

  • I used some of my scraps to stuff my dolls like they did back in the day. It works out pretty good but I wouldn't use it for all dolls.

  • That's a great idea! It also took me a long time to realize this but if you are a quilter and have cut off triangle sets (quick corner piecing) from blocks that you are constructing.... Well, when you cut off that triangle pair, sew them on the diagonal, press open, square up and you have mini sets to use to make small candle mats, dolly blankets, etc. You can tea stain. Fun! This is fabric you might have thrown out. Also, try using your clippings for stuffing pillows. I make large denim floor pillows for TV watching and stuff them with my clippings. Very Prim!
