How to Hand Dip Candles & Ornies*

So you want to try your hand at dipping candles and ornaments in wax? Here is an easy and fun way to do it! Remember that you will be working with hot wax. Prepare yourself ahead of time so that you avoid accidents.

Supplies:
Presto Pot for Melting Wax
Pillar or Votive Wax
Candle Scent
Vanilla or Ivory Color
Wisk for Stirring
Ground Cinnamon in Pan or Bowl
Thermometer
Items to be Dipped (candles, tapers, ornies)

Put about a pound of wax in the presto pot and melt it on a low heat.

Wax Dipping

You don’t want your wax to be too hot. 155-175 is a good temperature to go by. Keep your wax temperature at all times. After the wax is melted add your color. Stir very carefully. Add 1 ounce of scent per pound of wax and stir very carefully. After that is all mixed and you are standing there smelling it (cuz its gonna smell awesome), get your things ready to dip. Candles are very easy. You can purchase plain candles at the dollar stores or if you are an experienced candle maker pour your own like we do. When you are dipping please keep in mind that the wax is going to be hot. I cannot stress this enough.

Wax burns can be very serious. Dip your candle in the wax and roll in cinnamon while it is still wet.

Wax Dipping

Repeat this process about 5-6 times. It will start to glob up in places and look wonderful!

Wax Dipping

That’s all there is to dipping candles.

Now for the ornies. Please use tongs when dipping ornies if they are not connected to a string or wire. Dip each ornie once and roll in cinnamon.

Wax Dipping

Use your imagination. You can dip hang tags, stuffed stars and hearts, cinnamon sticks, dried apples and oranges to add to potpourri, the list is endless.

Wax Dipping

Please have fun with this craft but do remember that if you are not careful you can burn yourself. If you are going to attempt pouring your own candles please do the research and testing involved in making a safe candle.

  • What is a Presto cooker? Plus I'd like to know what other things you can drip stuff in after you dip in the hot wax?

  • Alysha--I do not use my candles. When I make them, when they are done and cool, I tie a piece of rafia around them, and just place them in a good spot. The good smell lasts forever!!!

  • I have done exactly what you said, but when I burn the candles, they completely melt over their own sides instead on in a tunnel and they end up making a huge puddle. What am I doing wrong? Someone please help!!!
